Software Engineer Salary in Bangladesh 2026 — Complete Breakdown by Experience & Company Type

Software Engineer Salary in Bangladesh — How Much Can You Really Earn?

Every time you open Facebook or YouTube, you see claims about software engineers earning crores of taka. Massive monthly incomes. Six-figure dollar salaries. But how much of that is actually true — especially in Bangladesh?

In this post, I'm going to debug the real salary picture for software engineers in Bangladesh. We'll break down exactly how much you can earn at each experience level, what factors determine your pay, and what you need to do to reach the top of the salary range.

What Determines a Software Engineer's Salary?

Think of it like cricket. Shakib Al Hasan playing in the national team earns a completely different salary than someone playing in a local upazila-level cricket league. The budget for a local league might be 5-7 lakh taka total — so a player there earns maybe 10-20 thousand taka. But a national-level player, where the budget runs into crores, can earn 5-10 lakh taka per month easily.

Software engineering works the same way. Your salary depends on which team you play for.

Here are the key factors:

  • Company type — Is it a local company, a foreign company, or a startup?
  • Business profitability — Is the company making money or burning through funding?
  • Economic domain — Are you working in the Bangladesh economy or a foreign economy?
  • IT industry size — Bangladesh's IT export is around $1.5 billion, compared to much larger markets like India
  • Your skill set — The single biggest factor you can actually control

The same tomato that costs 2 taka per kg in Jhenaidah sells for 200 taka in Dhaka. Where you sell your skills matters just as much as the skills themselves.

The 5 Categories of Software Companies in Bangladesh

Before we talk numbers, you need to understand the five types of companies that hire software engineers in Bangladesh. Each category has a very different salary structure.

Category 1: Bangladeshi Companies Serving Foreign Clients

These are local companies that hire Bangladeshi engineers and provide them as manpower to foreign markets. They act as a bridge — you work from Bangladesh, but the revenue comes from abroad.

Category 2: Foreign Companies with Bangladesh Teams

International companies that have set up engineering teams in Bangladesh. They bring foreign budgets but hire locally.

Category 3: Bangladeshi Product Companies

Local companies building their own software products and selling them in domestic or international markets.

Category 4: Tech-Enabled Non-Tech Companies

Banks, hospitals, insurance companies, airlines, universities — their main business isn't software, but they need internal engineering teams to build and maintain tools.

Category 5: Startups

Early-stage to growth-stage startups, varying wildly based on their funding stage (seed, Series A/B/C), runway, and profitability.

Understanding which category a company falls into immediately tells you the salary range you can expect.

Software Engineer Salary Breakdown by Experience

Fresher / Junior Level (0-1 Years Experience)

Company CategorySalary Range (BDT/month)
Category 1 & 2 (Foreign-facing)30,000 – 1,00,000
Category 3 (Local product companies)25,000 – 40,000
Category 4 (Banks, hospitals, etc.)15,000 – 23,000
Category 5 (Startups)Rarely hire freshers

Important: If a company is offering you 1 lakh taka as a fresher, they expect far more than a typical fresher. You'll need:

  • Strong Git and GitHub knowledge
  • A portfolio of real projects
  • Solid problem-solving skills
  • A good professional network

These are the engineers who invested in learning before their first job, not after.

Want to build that kind of portfolio? Our Coding Fundamentals Course gives you the strong foundation that top companies look for in freshers — covering programming basics, problem-solving patterns, and real project work.

Mid-Level (2-3 Years Experience)

This is where things get interesting. Engineers with 2-3 years of experience are in highest demand, especially at startups.

Company CategorySalary Range (BDT/month)
Category 1 (BD company, foreign clients)60,000 – 1,50,000
Category 2 (Foreign company, BD team)60,000 – 2,00,000
Category 3 (Local product companies)30,000 – 1,00,000
Category 5 (Good startups)30,000 – 1,00,000+

At this level, startup offers can be tempting — some pay up to 1.5-2 lakh taka. But before jumping in, do your due diligence:

  • Check the startup's runway — How many months of funding do they have?
  • Is the product profitable? — Will they still need you after the initial build?
  • Research on TechCrunch and Crunchbase — Look at their funding history
  • Talk to people in the network — What's the internal engineering reputation?

At this stage, I recommend staying at a company for at least 3-4 years. Frequent job hopping at the 2-3 year mark can hurt your career more than help it.

Senior Level (5-6 Years Experience)

At 5-6 years, you can legitimately call yourself a senior developer. My strong recommendation: target Category 1, Category 2, or well-funded startups at this stage.

Work ModeSalary Range (BDT/month)
Local (Category 1 & 2)1,50,000 – 2,00,000
Remote (Foreign companies)3,00,000 – 5,00,000

Remote positions can multiply your salary by 2-3x compared to local roles. But landing remote jobs requires:

  • Months of dedicated preparation
  • Strong system design knowledge
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Typically 3-4 months of active interviewing

The engineers who reach this level didn't just write code — they understood architecture, system design, and business impact.

Building these advanced skills takes structure. Our Backend Development Course covers 42 modules from beginner to advanced — including system design, software architecture, and production-grade deployment that senior roles demand.

Lead / Staff Level (7-8+ Years Experience)

At this level, you're no longer just writing code. You can orchestrate an entire technical business:

  • Lead UI/UX teams and collaborate with product managers
  • Deploy technical products to market and build revenue pipelines
  • Make architectural decisions that affect the entire organization
  • Design systems at scale
Work ModeSalary Range (BDT/month)
Local (Category 1, 2 & 3)1,50,000 – 4,00,000
Local (Good startups)2,00,000 – 5,00,000
Local (Non-tech companies)1,00,000 – 3,00,000
Remote (Foreign companies)7,00,000 – 10,00,000+

I've personally seen engineers with this skill set earning even more than 10 lakh taka per month in remote roles. At this level, your network, reputation, and ability to deliver business results matter as much as your technical skills.

The One Factor That Overrides Everything: Your Skill Set

Here's the hard truth — none of these numbers matter if you don't have the skills.

You can have 10 years of experience. But if you're not competitive, companies will still offer you 30-40 thousand taka. Your years of experience don't automatically translate to higher pay. Your actual capabilities do.

There's a real story from a big tech company in Saudi Arabia. Their office security guard started at 5-6 thousand taka per month. He slept in the office, ate there, lived there. But over 5 years, he taught himself to code, learned engineering skills, and eventually joined the same company as a software engineer — at 10-15x his original salary.

That transformation happened because he focused on one thing: building real, marketable skills.

How to Maximize Your Software Engineer Salary

  1. Invest in fundamentals first — Data structures, algorithms, system design. These are what separate a 30k salary from a 3 lakh salary.

  2. Choose your company category wisely — Category 1 and 2 companies (foreign-facing) consistently pay 2-3x more than purely local companies.

  3. Build a strong network — The best opportunities come through referrals, not job portals.

  4. Prepare for remote work — Remote positions from foreign companies offer the highest salary ceiling in Bangladesh.

  5. Never stop learning — The tech industry evolves fast. Engineers who stay current earn more.

  6. Negotiate with data — Know your category, know your market rate, and negotiate confidently.
